Universal Fertiliser Corporation was founded by Sri. D. Periaswamy, one of the founder Directors of Sakthi Sugars Limited - now an Rs.1500 crore group - and his enterprising son P. Vijaynataraj, whose dynamism and vision have seen Universal grow into a multifaceted group.
The founder family were agriculturists with a cultural heritage of around 500 years with vast land holdings. They entered into business in 1962 by becoming financiers servicing industrialists, vehicle loans etc. In 1964 they started bus fleet operations having routes covering Erode, Coimbatore, Dindigul and Tirupur.
Sri. D.Periaswamy was a close friend and relative of the late Governor Mr. C. Subramaniam, a key player in the Green Revolution. He was also well acquainted with the former President, Mr. R. Venkataraman, as well as the late Chief Ministers of Tamil Nadu, Mr. Bhaktavatsalam and Mr. K. Kamaraj. Through these contacts, the Lower Bhavani Project canal was extended up to their village in 1958 making it a highly potential belt for agricultural activities. This irrigation system has gone a long way in eradicating poverty and famine in that area thus benefiting several hundred farmers. In addition, he was instrumental in bringing electrical connectivity to several villages of the district in 1959.
The first foray into the fertiliser industry was in 1968 at Chennai, dealing with Neyveli Lignite Corporation Urea and Complex Fertilisers produced by Fertiliser Corporation of India. Full fledged operations started in Coimbatore in the year 1972. Subsequently, in 1975, the Head Office was shifted to Gobichettipalayam in Erode district. Since then, the organisation has grown to operate through 10 branches across the districts of Coimbatore, Erode, Nilgiris Salem and Dharmapuri. The network services 1200 dealers network spread over the districts of Coimbatore, Erode, Nilgiris, Salem, Dharmapuri and Namakkal.
